About Bill Fleming

William W. “Bill” Fleming is a small business owner with deep roots in Virginia.

The son of a career Army officer, Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1948. His father’s military assignments took the family to many locations around the world, including Germany and England before they moved to Alexandria, Virginia.

Bill is a graduate of Alexandria public schools and earned his B.S. and Ph.D. in Physics at North Carolina State University. While there, Bill enrolled in the ARMY ROTC program. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and later served in the Active Reserves for six years. Bill also earned a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, prior to going to work as a research physicist with IBM.

In 1994, the family moved to Virginia Beach, where Bill helped manage MILCOM Systems Corporation, a technology firm founded by his father. The highly successful company was later sold and Bill started another successful business, Network Interfaces Corporation, which specializes in small business technology solutions. As a manager and business owner, Bill has helped created hundreds of jobs, employing many of our military veterans.

Bill is active in numerous business and civic organizations, including the Economics Club of Hampton Roads and the Main Street Alliance. He has served on The Advisory Board for Industrial Education at Tidewater Community College and the Advisory Board for the E.C.P.I. College of Technology. Bill and his wife are active members of Lynnhaven River NOW, the Back Bay Restoration Project, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and the Citizens Committee to Protect the Elderly.

Bill is married to the former Teri Basham, a native of Roanoke, Virginia. They have two grown sons, Eric and Brian. Devoted parents, Bill and Teri have volunteered in public schools, the Boy Scouts and several youth sports programs. They will be celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary in 2010.
